~~ Welcome to Espino Blanco ~~

The Biological Reserve Espino Blanco (White thorn), is located in the district of Santa Rosa, Turrialba.  It is specifically found in the village of La Verbana, 8 kilometers north of the city of Turrialba.  It is at an elevation of 1100 meters over sea level, and is dedicated to the conservation of forest species and local flora and fauna.  It is intimately bound to Guayabo through a biological corridor full of diversity and the Columbus culture.

The reserve is a total area of   two hundred twenty-nine thousand square meters at the present time (229,000 square meters) and more than 60% of that area constitutes primary forest.  The reserve contains more than five hundred forest species and there is an important variety of animals such as; vipers, pavas, small raccoons, armadillos, tepezcuites, as well as a great variety of butterflies and birds.  Its name comes from a tree characteristic of the area, the Espino Blanco (White Thorn), which is in the process of disappearance.  In the reserve there are many trees specie that are really worthy of being admired.

The wood of the Espino Blanco is very hard and was used in the older houses of the village.  The reserve has three paths for walking, and takes about three and a half hours this allows time for explanations given by area guides and a twenty minute lunch break.  The paths are built on unleveled land but they are perfectly accessible to visitors from 5 years on up.

The forest reserve Espino Blanco has been created with the purpose of protecting the existent aquifer there and its abundant source of water for the Turrialba valley especially to the south-east.

The trail is located amid a very attractive mixture of primary and secondary forest that allows visitors to differentiate them clearly and to see the characteristics of one and the other

Brilliant exhibition: Turrialba, the most sustainable region of the country

With the participation of more than 40 persons, the mayor Alfonso Perez and the engineer Luis Fernando Mata, Chief of the Minae in Turrialba's region, discoursed brilliantly upon the topic of turning Turrialba into the most sustainable place of the country. The activity was carried out last Saturday, the 27th of December in the frame of the environmental chats that carries out Wagelia Espino Blanco Lodge in the Biological Reserve of the same name.

The engineer Mata contributed the most important information. For example, Turrialba has more than 11 thousand hectares legally protected, more than 10 thousand hectares of private forests protected by individuals, who constitutes a very substantial part in protected forests, by the State and individuals. Also he mentioned the effort that many coffee growers and other farmers do for sowing providing useful wood trees that promote the agricultural operations and cut periodically these trees, sowing again others.

Mata also informed that according to the most recent information Turrialba it is the greenest region, because has more forests of the whole province of Cartago. The engineer thinks that Turrialba must preserve these forests, extend them, and also increase the sowing of providing useful wood species to strengthen an economy that is sustainable. The soils of the region are very suitable to sow wood.

Protection and education

Regarding the Master Alfonso Perez, mayor of Turrialba, gave a lesson, demonstrating wide knowledge in the managing of four essential elements that he determines as vital for the sustainability; the use of the soil, the topic of the water, the air, and the education.

Perez pleaded for clear rules for the farmers, to strengthen the conservationist agriculture, to grant environmental benefits, strengthening of the concept of rural development, to use the trees as guarantee for credits, to strengthen the association networks, to use more the State as a buyer, convince to the religious groups in order that their leaders educate more to people in environmental topics, give incentives in order that fewer emission issues fewer taxes are paid, to produce electricity by means of the garbage.

In the case of Turrialba he showed worry because do not want the region to be an extractive economy, neither for the State nor for the companies. Where there is extracted the water of the rivers, the quarries, the best lands, etc. Without the region obtains the appropriate benefits that it should receive. Perez declared himself in opposition to the Pacuare dam, and defended the protection and the rational use of the water that it was called the white oil.
Finally he insisted that an enclosing society implies the sustainability necessarily, of opportunities for all, where the axis of the education is essential.

The assistants used the word during an hour, conversed with the panelists, asked about the organic agriculture and many other worries, and at 5 p.m. they all took a cup of coffee in the Restaurant of Espino Blanco Lodge, with the famous “empanadas” of Turrialba cheese, which Juana (the chef) does.
Also announced that 2009 chats program will be opened in March, last Saturday of every month, which topics will be spread opportunely.

Rain and cold did not prevent chats about alternative engines

In the midst of fog, rain, wind and cold, which gave the impression of London climate, took place the environmental chats for the month of November in the Biological Reserve Espino Blanco.
For this occasion the theme was the advantages that have engines with regard to conventional fossil fuel engines, in terms of cost, performance and environmental impact.

The exhibitor, Sebastian Alvarado, a member of a research team from the Interamericana University of Costa Rica, presented the property issue with great comparing the performance of internal combustion engines, both petrol and those of diesel, gas and bio-fuels, compared with the operation of electric motors, battery power as sources of energy, or hybrid configuration powered by solar energy, and also details of the investigations that are made with water-based engines, and compressed air.

The most obvious is that which reveals that although electric motors has a higher cost than the conventional ones, in terms of performance, are major advantages, especially in environmental terms are more appropriate, not only because they don’t pollute the air, but because having no vibration, do not produce sonic pollution, huge advantage, since one of the serious problems, which are the engines that has the market currently is the permanent noise they generate.

To the chat attended mechanics of the city, as well as other people committed to environmental issues, from Turrialba and other parts of Costa Rica.

At the end, as always, we had a cup of coffee with the famous “empanadas” made by Juana, the chef of the “Fonda Doña Haydee”, the Wagelia Espino Blanco Lodge restaurant.
The next chat will be at the end of December with the participation of the Mayor of Turrialba Alfonso Perez and the engineer Fernando Mata, head of MINAE in Turrialba, who will talk about the topic: "How to turn Turrialba in the only city of the country more environmentally sustainable?"
We are all invited to December 27th 2008.
