The forest reserve Espino Blanco (White thorn), is located in the district of Santa Rosa, Turrialba. It is specifically found in the village of La Verbana, 8 kilometers north of the city of Turrialba. It is at an elevation of 1100 meters over sea level, and is dedicated to the conservation of forest species and local flora and fauna. It is intimately bound to Guayabo through a biological corridor full of diversity and the Columbus culture.
The reserve is a total area of two hundred twenty-nine thousand square meters at the present time (229,000 square meters) and more than 60% of that area constitutes primary forest. The reserve contains more than five hundred forest species and there is an important variety of animals such as; vipers, pavas, small raccoons, armadillos, tepezcuites, as well as a great variety of butterflies and birds. Its name comes from a tree characteristic of the area, the Espino Blanco (White Thorn), which is in the process of disappearance. In the reserve there are many trees specie that are really worthy of being admired.
The wood of the Espino Blanco is very hard and was used in the older houses of the village. The reserve has three paths for walking, and takes about three and a half hours this allows time for explanations given by area guides and a twenty minute lunch break. The paths are built on unleveled land but they are perfectly accessible to visitors from 5 years on up.
The forest reserve Espino Blanco has been created with the purpose of protecting the existent aquifer there and its abundant source of water for the Turrialba valley especially to the south-east. This property was acquired by the Wagelia Corp. from the Garita family who had inherited it from their parents.
THE PATH OF LIFE
It is the longest and most picturesque trail. This journey is from the lower areas into the mid ascents, and all along the trail the famous and enormous White Thorn tees can be seen along with other important plants of the region. Here the visitor can find the ¨Eye of the Sky¨, which is an enormous tree with a hole inside. The sky can be observed by inclining the head up from its roots. The name of this path is a reminder to reality, life is like a stairway, we sometimes ascend and we sometimes descend, there are many turns and often we get entangled in it and we may even get lost. The interesting thing is that the path finishes where the ascent finishes, ¨At the point in our lives where we have the hope of arriving where we always wished to be.¨
THE PATH OF LOVE
This trail is easier to walk, because of its topography and receives its name from a story of love that happened in Verbana 75 years ago to a 13 year old girl, named María Fonseca. She fell in love with José Joaquin Durán, who was 15. Being so young, their parents didn’t allow their courtship. Then, the young couple dared their families one weekend and escaped to the mountain, where the reserve is located today. For three nights and four days they stayed in the shadows and hugged next to the trees, until a neighbor found them sick and dehydrated. The tree where this all took place, is pointed out on the journey.
The trail is located amid a very attractive mixture of primary and secondary forest that allows visitors to differentiate them clearly and to see the characteristics of one and the other

La Reserva Foresta Espino blanco situada en el distrito de Santa Rosa de Turrialba, específicamente en el caserío la Verbena, a 8 kilómetros al norte de la Ciudad de Turrialba, 1100 metros sobre el nivel del mar, es una finca dedicada a la conservación de especies forestales y de la flora y fauna de la región. Esta internamente ligado a Guayabo mediante un corredor biológico lleno de diversidad y de cultura precolombina.
La reserva tiene en la actualidad un área total de doscientos veintinueve mil metros cuadrados (229.000 m2) y más de un sesenta por ciento de esa área lo constituye el bosque primario.
La reserva contiene más de quinientas especies forestales y hay una variedad importante de animales entre las que sobresalen las víboras, pavas, mapachines, armadillos, tepezcuintles, así como gran variedad de mariposas y pájaros.
Su nombre obedece a un árbol propio del lugar que se llama Espino Blanco, el cual está en proceso de desaparición. En la reserva hay muchos ejemplares de esa especie realmente dignos de ser admirados. Su madera es dura y se usaba mucho en las casas que construían los antiguos pobladores del lugar.
La reserva tiene tres senderos para caminar, con un tiempo de recorrido aproximado a las tres horas y media, incluyendo las explicaciones de los guías y unos 20 minutos una comida y una bebida. Los senderos están construidos sobre terreno quebrado, pero son perfectamente accesibles a todos los visitantes a partir de los 5 años de edad.
La Reserva Forestal Espino Blanco se creo con la finalidad también de proteger los mantos acuíferos existentes ahí, y que son frente importante del suministro de agua al cantón de Turrialba, en especial al sur – este de la Ciudad. La finca fue adquirida por la empresa Wagelia S.A
EL SENDERO DE LA VIDA
Es el más largo y pintoresco. Su recorrido es de bajuras y subidas, y a sus lados pueden observarse los famosos y enormes árboles de espino blanco, conjuntamente con muchas otras especies importantes de la zona. En él se encuentra el ojo del cielo, que es un enorme árbol hueco por dentro, cuyo orificio de salida hacia el cielo, puede observarse inclinando la cabeza hacia arriba desde sus raíces. El nombre de este Sendero es un recordatorio a una realidad; la vía es como una escalera a veces subimos y a veces bajamos, hay muchas vueltas y a menudo nos enredamos en ellas y hasta nos podemos perder. Lo interesante es que el Sendero termina donde acaba la subida. Al final en la vida tenemos la esperanza de llegar siempre donde queremos.
EL SENDERO DEL AMOR
Este sendero, más fácil de recorrer por su topografía recibe su nombre de una historia de amor ocurrida en la Verbena. Resulta que hace más de 75 años, una joven llamada María Fonseca, con apenas trece años de edad se enamoró de José Joaquín Durán de quince años. Siendo tan menores, sus padres no permitían una relación de noviazgo entre ellos, por lo que un fin de semana desafiaron sus familias y huyeron hacia la montaña donde se ubica actualmente la Reserva. Allí pasaron tres noches y cuatro días, al abrigo de un inmenso árbol, hasta que un vecino los encontró enfermos y deshidratados. El árbol donde se produjo ese hecho de amor esta señalado en el recorrido. El sendero está ubicado en medio de una mezcla muy atractiva de bosque primario y secundario que permite diferenciarlos claramente y explicar las características de uno y de otro.
EL SENDERO DEL MIRADOR
Este sendero recibe su nombre porque llega a un sitio donde se divisa la Ciudad de Turrialba, una parte importante del Valle, y el distrito de Santa Rosa. Hay un mirador con una vista muy bella, y es obligado lugar de parada para descansar unos minutos. Su recorrido es quebrado y nace y llega al Sendero de la Vida. Es muy pintoresco.
